The body of the Monarch 3 4-16×50 is made of a single piece of anodized aluminum. The anodizing processes give the scope its matte black finish which is far superior to painted scopes. When the paint is applied to the body it will eventually scratch and fade. But with the anodizing process, the surface of the aluminum is treated with a protective oxide layer. This means that there is no fading, and will help resist scratches.
The aluminum body also allows the model to be rather lightweight. At just over 19 ounces you will barely feel this scope on your rifle.
The overall length is just a little under 15 inches, which is a little longer than other models of similar objective size and magnification. Overall, though, the length will not intrude upon your ability to zero in on your target.
With a magnification that can be adjusted from 4 times to 16 times, this scope will provide for excellent sighting on long-range targets. The 50mm objective lens is a bit larger than many hunters find necessary. However, the 50mm size will let in a large amount of light to the scope which can be a real added benefit during low-light situations like dawn and dusk. It can also be a nice feature for those who have some diminished eye strength as this will help compensate.
The Monarch 3 features spring-loaded turrets with zero reset. This makes dialing in the focus or setting the distance convenient and easy.
The 4-16×50 also features side focus style adjustments to compensate for any parallax you might experience at farther distances. This side focus is much more natural in a shooting position than models with adjustments at the objective lens. And once you have your settings perfect, the Nikon Monarch 3 comes with screw-on protectors to keep you setting secure and avoid any accidental bumping.
These hand-turned knobs can also be used to calculate for elevation and windage so that no shot is left up to chance.
This model also features Nikon’s BDC reticle which is preset at 100 yards. The reticle will provide you with markers to make the calculation and aiming at farther away objects easy. And with Nikon’s “Spot On Ballistics Program,” you can calculate the BDC settings for your exact rifle and ammo. Never has it been easier to quickly adjust distance aiming than with the Nikon scopes.
This model has an eye relief of around 4 inches which makes it perfect for keeping you rifle firmly in place without having to make adjustments for proper positioning.
The lenses are fully multi-coated to protect them from gathering dust and to help them resist scratching. The tube is also completely nitrogen purged so it will resist fogging in humid weather.
The Monarch 3 utilizes Nikon’s Ultra ClearCoat® system for superior light transmission, at around 95%. This ensures that you will see almost everything that’s out there to see and never miss out on big game.
It has a field of view from 6.3 feet to 25.2 feet (at 100 yards) depending on the magnification. This should give you plenty of width to zero in on your target without much trouble.
The lenses are conveniently protected by flip-up covers on both the ocular and objective lenses. A single flip and you’ll have quick access to the scope. The covers fit snuggly on the scope to keep the lenses from being scratched or otherwise damaged during transport.
Nikon also supplies a cloth to make cleaning the lenses easier. This way you don’t have try and use your sleeve out in the field to clean them which would almost surely result in the lenses being scratched.
The Nikon Monarch line is a premium line for Nikon, but compared to other scopes with similar features and functionality, the Monarch 3 is highly affordable.
Nikon scopes come with a limited lifetime warranty for all non-electronic parts. This guarantees the scope against any manufacturer or part defects for the life of the scope. Given this, it should be clear that Nikon will back up the product for anything other than customer abuse.
If you are looking for one of the highest-rated, quality scopes on the market, then the Nikon Monarch 3 4-16×50 is first in class for its price-range. It comes with all the functionality you need out of a quality scope with premium parts and construction.
With this scope you can be sure if you don’t come home with a big prize, it won’t be the fault of the scope!
