If you’re a gun collector, and especially if you’re a fan of Chris Kyle, there is exciting news!  Springfield Armory® has recently released a limited edition Chris Kyle TRP™ Operator.  The handgun is part of their Legend Series of pistols and a portion of all sales will benefit the Chris Kyle Frog Foundation.

Who Was Chris Kyle?

Christopher Scott Kyle was born in Odessa, Texas in 1974.  He grew up loving the outdoors, including deer and pheasant hunting, and later he competed in several bronco busting contests.  This is where is life-long passion for guns started.

Kyle began his 10-year military career by joining the Navy in 1999, after a 2-year stint in college where he studied agriculture.  His innate talent got him selected to be a part of the elite Navy Seals where he was trained as a sniper.  During his tenure, he served in four deployments to Iraq.  By his account, he killed 160 people and earned the nickname, “The Devil of Ramadi,” causing his enemies to put a $20,000 bounty on the head of any U.S. sniper.

His stellar military service earned him many awards; two Silver Stars and five Bronze Stars.  After he left the military in 2009, he authored the bestselling book-turned major motion picture, American Sniper, The Autobiography of the Most Lethal Sniper in U.S. Military HistoryHe also participated in NBC’s Stars Earn Stripes and co-founded the non-profit FITCO Cares Foundation, which provides fitness equipment to veterans wounded in war.

Tragically, Chris was murdered while at a gun range with his colleague Chad Littlefield.  The pair were shot by Eddie Ray Routh, a former Marine with a history of mental illness.  Chris Kyle was just 38 years old, leaving behind a wife and two young children.

Kyle and Springfield Armory®

Chris was a fan of the Springfield Armory® TRP™ while serving in the military.  In his book American Sniper, he writes, “In 2004, I brought over a Springfield Armory® TRP™ Operator, which used a .45 caliber round.  It had a 1911 body style, with custom grips and a rail system that let me add a light and laser combo.  Black, it had a bull barrel and was an excellent gun – until it took a frag for me in Fallujah.  I was actually able to get it repaired – those Springfields are tough.”

Springfield Armory® partnered with Chris’s widow Taya, and created 1000 Limited Edition Chris Kyle 1911 Legend Series TRP™ Pistols, each laser engraved with their issue number.  The Springfield Armory® site describes how the gun will be packaged, “The Legend Series Pistols will come packaged in a custom and also serialized mahogany presentation case.  Additionally, a memorial copy of the best-selling book, American Sniper, signed by Taya Kyle will accompany the package.  The attractive presentation case also included a .999 pure silver Chris Kyle limited edition challenge coin and a Springfield Armory® certificate of authenticity.”CK12

Another cool feature of the $2,499 pistol, is that a portion of all proceeds will benefit the Chris Kyle Frog Foundation.  The foundation’s mission, according to Taya, is to “honor God, country and family by serving those who serve.  To us, that represents the marriages and family life of our law enforcement, EMS, and military communities.”
